PICKETT COUNTY DROPS TO 1-3 WITH LOSS TO SUNBRIGHT ACADEMY

September 14- A wet field, inexperience and too many turnovers all added up to poor night of football for the Bobcats last Friday night at Sunbright. The injured Bobcat players were able to play once again, but were slowed and Nick Cross aggravated his injury and came out of the game in the 4th quarter.

        It was just 6-0 Sunbright after one quarter, but Sunbright poured it on in the second to take a big 33-6 lead at the half. They added 15 more points in the third quarter for a 48-6 lead, with neither team scoring in the final quarter for a 48-6 final. The Bobcats turned the ball over twice on interceptions, 5 times on fumbles on a wet and muddy field and had one punt blocked.

        Jonathan Sells had 16 carries for 36 yards, Justin Cross had 4 carries for 16 yards, Kevin Connor stepped up again with 5 carries for 67 yards, and Nick Cross had 4 carries for 13 yards. The Bobcats lone score came on a kickoff return by Sam Cummings which went nearly 90 yards for the TD. On defense, Kevin Conner had 8 tackles, Justin Cross had 5 tackles, Jonathan Sells had 4 tackles, Chase Pennycuff had 3, Justin Masiongale had 2, Nathan Rigney had 2 with Brody Cook, Matter Brenner, Cody Dowdy, George Rich, and Nick Cross all having one tackle. BOBCATS DROP MSFC OPENER TO LANCASTER CHRISTIAN, 6-33

September 7- Pickett County got within striking distance of LCA in their MSFC season opener, but could not capitalize in a 33-6 loss. Late in the third quarter, the Bobcats pulled within 9 points on a rushing touchdown and shortly thereafter recovered an LCA fumble. PCHS couldn't put the ball in the endzone, however, and LCA pulled away for the win.

        The Bobcats forced seven turnovers but could not convert those opportunities into points. Quarterback Nick Cross led the PCHS rushing attack and got plenty of help from Jonathan Sells. The loss moves Pickett County to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the MSFC.

        Pickett County will travel to Sunbright Academy this weekend as they try to even their record at 2-2.

The Bobcats fell to 0-1 in Mid-South Football Conference play.



BOBCATS MOVE TO 1-1 WITH WIN OVER RED BOILING SPRINGS

September 1- The Bobcats won their first varsity football game in decades Friday night with a come from behind win over Red Boiling Springs, 20-14. After decades without a team, Pickett County built a successful JV program over the past few years. The ‘Cats are now playing a varsity schedule with non-league and Mid-South Football Conference games.

Nick Cross was 5 for 10 in passing for 79 yards, including one touchdown pass. Evan Key had 2 catches for 41 yards, plus an outstanding night punting and kicking. Sam Cummings had 2 catches for 13 yards. Kevin Conner had 1 catch for 25 yards. In rushing, Jonathan Sells led the team again with 23 carries for 97 yards, 1 touchdown and a 2 point conversion. Justin Cross had 11 rushes for 59 yards and 1 TD.

On defense Nick Cross grabbed 2 interceptions, and Sam Cummings had one. Justin Cross, Cody Dowdy and Kevin Conner each forced one fumble each. Justin Cross had 13 tackles and 2 assists. Jonathan Sells had 6 tackles and 1 assist. Kevin Conner had 5 tackles and 1 assist. Evan Key had 5 tackles and 1 assist, and George Richardson had 2 tackles. There were several players with 1 tackle each.

Coach Matt Walker complimented his assistants for their excellent work including Brian Tompkins on defense and OB Caudle and Brad Richardson on scouting, helping with the offence and special teams. Coach Walker also expressed his and the team’s appreciation for the large and loud crowd of fans which cheered the Bobcats on to victory Friday night. BOBCATS DOWNED BY JACKSON COUNTY IN VARSITY OPENER, 35-14

August 25- The Pickett County High School Bobcats started out their first varsity season with a hard fought loss to Jackson County by the score of 35-14. The Bobcats kept the game close through three quarters before Jackson County pulled away in the 4th quarter. Jackson County struck first on a Cody Franklin 20 yard TD score on a pass from Derek Loftis. Justin Stewart kicked the extra point. That was the only scoring of the quarter which ended 7-0 Blue Devils.

        The Blue Devils increased their lead to 14-0 with a 3 yard run by Ragland as he went in for the score. The extra point kick by Stewart made it a 14-0 game. But the Bobcats came right back with a Nick Cross 5 yard run with Johnathan Sells running the two point conversion. At the half it was Jackson Co. 14, Bobcats 8. In the third quarter Jackson County increased their lead to 21-8 with another Ragland run. This one was a 2 yarder for the score. Stewart added the extra point. The Bobcats next score came on a 80 yard pass to Sam Cummings from Nick Cross. Cutting the Jackson County lead to 21-14. The two point try failed with the quarter ending 21-14.

        Jackson County scored twice in the final quarter to pull away for the 35-14 win. Nick Cross was 2 for 6 and 90 yards passing in the game. He had 1 TD and 2 interceptions. Johnathan Sells had 127 yards on 20 carries. Justin Cross added 28 yards on 9 carries. Sells had 5 tackles, Conner 6, Rich 4, Massengale 4, Cross 4 and Cummings 3. Several other players had 1 tackle each.
